My Dissertation...
I completed my work creating a Taxonomy of Media Usage in Multimedia
(T-MUM). This was largely based off the work of Drs. Rachelle S. Heller and C. Dianne Martin as well as Talib Abdul Aleem.
Heller and Martin first created a Media Taxonomy in 1995. It is based on a two-dimensional model where media types and media expressions are evaluated. Three types of media expressions were identified: elaboration, representation, and abstraction. The three types of media expressions were combined with four media types: text, graphics, sound, and motion (Heller & Martin, 1995).
Then in 1998, Aleem finished his dissertation on a Taxonomy of Multimedia Interactivity (TMI). In his dissertation, Aleem expands on Heller and Martin's earlier work. He delves deeper into the interactive aspect of multimedia and clarifies the media types with their varying forms of interactive media expression. He offers both descriptions and examples for each media expression combined with six different systems, or media types: text, graphics, audio, video, animation, and multimedia. The four types of media expression, or interactivity, were identified as passive, reactive, proactive, and directive (Aleem, 1997, 1998).
Heller and Martin revisited their earlier work in combination with Aleem's research and completed a Multimedia Taxonomy. This work suggests a multimedia taxonomy framework based on a three-dimensional matrix including media types, media expressions, and context. The media type still referred to text, sound, graphics, and motion; and multimedia was added. The media expression still referred to elaboration, representation, and abstraction; and a general classification was added as well. However, the new dimension, context, includes audience, discipline, interactivity, quality, usefulness, and aesthetics (Heller & Martin, 1999a, 1999b).

In October 2002, Drs. Martin, Heller, and Aleem invited me to George Washington University to present the T-MUM at their Department Colloquium and to Dr. Aleem's multimedia class. My presentation abstract, bio, and presentation slides are available on a page on my T-MUM site.
Note: I've found that the PDF documents I've attached will view best on the Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5 (It's a free download and a much better product than earlier versions - it's worth your time).
